Taiwan has attained record recognition and support in 2023 as a result of the government’s steadfast diplomacy and the hard work of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and associated overseas offices to defend national dignity and ensure the rights of the people.

In a year of unsettling conflict such as the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and the outbreak of the latest Israel-Hamas war, Taiwan continues to stand on the front line of China’s authoritarian threats in a calm and dignified manner with perseverance and resolution, the MOFA said in a statement Dec. 22 reviewing its annual performance.

The government and people of Taiwan have worked together as a powerful force for good to offer humanitarian assistance to people affected by war and natural disasters, the ministry said. The country has also cooperated with allies and like-minded partners to promote prosperity and stability in the Indo-Pacific and beyond, it added.

According to the MOFA, progress is also reflected in robust ties with the U.S., the best-ever relations with the EU and an exemplary partnership with Japan. Thanks to the strong support from around the world, maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait has come to be regarded as an indispensable factor in ensuring security and prosperity in the region, the ministry said.

The ministry’s commitment to deepening cooperation with allies and friendly partners to address climate change issues, ensure global supply chains security, provide humanitarian assistance and promote good governance are also points of pride, the MOFA added.

Despite geopolitical turbulence, the MOFA said it will continue to tackle challenges with confidence, flexibility and resilience and expand Taiwan’s global presence so that the country will continue to shine as a beacon of democracy on the global stage. (SFC-E)
