New guidelines have been unveiled by the Central Epidemic Command Center designed to combat any potential spread of coronavirus in Taiwan, spotlighting the government’s continued commitment to maintaining public health and economic prosperity.

Effective April 3, hospital visitations are not allowed except for in exceptional circumstances such as when needing to attend diagnostic assessments for patients receiving critical care or to visit patients who have undergone surgery or intrusive treatment.

In addition, individuals who have visited crowded areas during the April 2-5 holiday should conduct self-health management for 14 days.

This includes avoiding public places as much as possible, wearing a mask when going out, taking body temperature twice daily and notifying authorities if any symptoms associated with COVID-19 develop.

To minimize the risk of transmission, the CECC advises the public to follow the government’s social distancing guidelines and practice proper hygiene.

The CECC also announced users of public transportation must wear masks and undergo temperature checks at stations countrywide, with failure to comply subject to a fine of up to NT$15,000 (US$500). A new rule is also being considered requiring patrons, staffers and vendors at restaurants, night markets and wet markets to wear masks, it said.

Statistics from the CECC reveal 376 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Taiwan as of April 7, including five deaths. A total of 1,297,690 cases have been identified in 181 other countries and territories. (SFC-E)
